Pinhole Photographs 2017-Present
Vanessa Woods’ pinhole photos are shot with pinhole cameras, the earliest kind of camera. For this work, Woods creates staged, in situ collage constructions that combine real objects and collage fragments. The pinhole camera, with its boundless depth of field, holds everything in focus serving to collapse what is fact and fiction. Injecting ancient relics, cultures, and bodies into environments throughout California, including the High Sierras, the Mojave Desert, the Salton Sea, and the San Francisco Sutro Baths—Woods’ pinhole constructions contract time, space and scale to condense history.
